Ashtanga Yoga Workshop

A Day Exploring Extensions of the East (Lengthening the front of the body.)

The morning will begin with guided sitting meditation to create a mood of stillness and ease.
Then through preliminaries and standing poses we aim to welcome in the poses to come – the idea being to feel our way into the back body rather than expressing the pose with outer dynamism.
Expect to come away with new and effective techniques to practice backbending with skill and enthusiasm.

The afternoon will include guided contemplation and small group discussion (Bring a pen and paper or journal.) This offers the chance to reflect on the motivations, meaning and purpose behind yoga practice which renews our commitment to the path of yoga.

The day will finish with recuperative poses and supine pranayama.

(Please only bring a light snack for lunch.)

Please bring along a notebook, pen and light veggie lunch.

Joey Miles

Joey came to yoga after a misspent youth pursuing the circus, martial arts and physical theatre. At Goldsmiths University of London he directed the Yoga Society for 3 years and sat regularly with the FWBO (Friends of the Western Buddhist Order). After completing his degree in Drama he became an assistant to Hamish Hendry at Ashtanga Yoga London, during this time he studied annually with his Guru the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore and in 2004 was authorised to teach the Primary Series.

From 2005-8 he taught the daily Mysore program at Triyoga, Primrose Hill, London. In 2005 Joey began practicing Iyengar Yoga with Alaric Newcomb, the attention to alignment, precision and subtle detail has greatly influenced his practice, teaching and perception and he regularly gets scolded now in Mysore by Sharat Jois for doing standing poses too wide!

In 2009 Joey moved to Leeds where he set up and continues to run Yorkshire’s first 3 day a week Mysore program: Ashtanga Yoga Leeds. In 2012 Joey assisted Sharath daily at the KPJAYI for a month and was given Authorisation level 2 (blessing to teach the intermediate series), on his most recent trip to Mysore in 2014 Joey completed the Advanced A series – it was hard!

Joey’s teaching is rigorous and playful and his intention is to bring clarity and emphasis to sound alignment within the Ashtanga system, thereby demonstrating the unity among different schools of yoga

The course is suitable for those who have been practising Ashtanga yoga regularly for at least one year. If you’re unsure about your suitability for this workshop then drop Rachel and Joey a line on: info@ashtangayogaleeds.com
