We’re so lucky to have Emmalene teaching at The Yoga Space. Her thoughtful, grounded style and deep personal experience bring something really special to the studio. Her story is one of resilience, insight, and quiet strength—and it shines through in every class she teaches.
Yoga as a Lifelong Companion
Emmalene first found yoga over 25 years ago, although her practice was on and off in her twenties. It wasn’t until she started facing challenges related to hypermobility spectrum disorder, anxiety and depression in her thirties that yoga truly became a cornerstone of her wellbeing. That shift inspired her to become a teacher herself, and she’s now been teaching for around four years.
“I’ve had ongoing physical and mental health struggles, and yoga and meditation have been such an important support through that. I knew it was part of my life’s work to help others discover those same benefits.”
Teaching Style
Emmalene’s classes are strong and slow, with a focus on Yin Yoga, Hatha Yoga, and mindfulness meditation. She’s passionate about offering practices that meet people where they are—physically, energetically, and emotionally.
“My classes give students a space to de-stress and reconnect with themselves. Whether you’re feeling energised or exhausted, there’ll be something for you.”
She’s also passionate about yoga philosophy and inner work, drawing from both yoga and Buddhism in her own life. Her approach is deeply curious, grounded in compassion and awareness.
A Moment of Realisation
A key moment in her journey came during a teacher training in Portugal:
“We were doing a meditation practice and I just couldn’t stop fidgeting. I realised in that moment that it was OK. I didn’t need to force myself to ‘look’ like I was practising yoga. I could actually surrender to my experience and meet myself as I was. That’s the heart of the practice—it’s not about appearances, it’s about union.”
Beyond the Mat
Yoga has not only supported Emmalene’s health, but also changed the way she relates to herself and others. “It’s helped me connect joyfully with my body—even through times of illness and injury—and it’s shaped how I move through life. I honestly wouldn’t be the same person without yoga.”
When she’s not teaching or practising, you might be surprised to hear she has two degrees in archaeology!
