I am always mentioning hip mobility in my classes. A good level of hip mobility is important, especially as we age. If you don’t keep your hips limber, problems will start to show up in other areas—usually the knees and the lower spine. You can practice yoga with me and other teachers at home with my Yoga Space Online channel.
Hip mobility is crucial for several reasons:
- Functional Movement: Good hip mobility enhances your ability to perform daily activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, and squatting. It allows for smoother and more efficient movements.
- Injury Prevention: Limited hip mobility can lead to compensatory movements in other joints, increasing the risk of injuries, especially in the lower back, knees, and ankles.
- Athletic Performance: For athletes, hip mobility is vital for explosive movements like sprinting, jumping, and changing directions. It contributes to overall agility and performance.
- Posture and Alignment: Proper hip function helps maintain pelvic alignment and improves posture, reducing strain on the spine and associated muscle groups.
- Range of Motion: Improved hip mobility increases your range of motion, allowing for greater flexibility in activities and enhancing both performance and comfort.
- Reduced Pain: Many people experience hip pain due to stiffness or tightness. Improving mobility can alleviate discomfort and lead to better overall joint health.
Incorporating hip mobility exercises into your routine can help maintain and enhance these benefits. Here are some suggestions to improve hip mobility:
- Squats– try and spend 10 minutes in a squat every day. It doesn’t have to be a consecutive 10 minutes. Start with 5 minutes and then build up.
- Pigeon poses-( you can do any variation)- reclining, seated, floor, chair but do it everyday. Make sure there is no discomfort in the knee joint.
- Lunges– high lunge or with a knee on the floor. Just keep lunging!!
If you are hypermobile, you want to build strength around the hips. So strengthen the glutes, quads, and core to create stability.
Happy Hips equals a happier and healthier you!!
